Urbanator

E-mail Print PDF

The Urbanator project is a collaborative proposal between Newcastle University KTH (Sweden), Avalanche Studio (computer games company based in Sweden), UCL (University College London and ETH (Zurich). The official abstract submitted to the EUs 7th framework programme is as follows:

"The Urbanator project will develop a unified approach to the modelling and procedural generation of convincing, computationally efficient, and effective virtual urban environments. This approach will allow the project to construct a pre-product authoring environment that takes a number of semantically rich, user-configurable rule objects as input and produces procedurally generated, real-time ready, dynamic 3D virtual urban environments in open, public formats as output. Our focus is on the computer- and video games industries and, specifically, on the creation of large scale urban environments for 3D computer games.

The output from the authoring environment will be adaptable for different game play dynamics and games engines and, rather than developing a ‘one size fits all’ solution, the project will focus on the definition of parametrisable rule objects that can be used together (or independently) to generate and populate game environments with immense variational richness. Our semantic approach to virtual environment creation will also allow end-users to rapid-prototype and experiment with their environments at very low costs.

With a consortium consisting of the leading researchers in urban morphology and the modelling of dynamic behaviour, together with a games company with a track record for producing AAA titles as the founding components, we have a unique opportunity to develop a highly competitive, open standards pre-product, as well as generating substantial new knowledge with immense commercial and creative potential.

07/01/09: Unfortunately the project was unsuccessful in attracting EU funding. The project is now in stasis until another form of funding can be found or parts can be integrated into another project.

EPIC

EPIC (Engine for the Propagation of Interactive Content) is a proposal to build a web based authoring environment to produce and share interactive content. The project proposal currently involves an animation software production company (DV) and a Swedish academic partner (KTH).

07/01/09: The project is currently in first draft form and is being considered for submission (as a two page outline) the EUs FET program.

Programming the Un-Programmable

E-mail Print PDF

Programming the Un-programmable is an outline proposal for an AHRC project. The outline text is as follows:

This project seeks to develop a methodology for architectural design and research which includes the vital role played by digital technologies as they become part of our interaction with the built environment. This project will investigate the concept of ‘programme’ in architecture as it relates to traditional design practice and adapt this knowledge focusing specifically  the role of architectural programmes in the support of informal communication and the development of social networks. The project will then seek to understand the concept of the architectural programme when those locations are separated and communication is therefore mediated. The project will seek to provide answers to the following core research questions:

1. What is the relationship between spatial configuration and programs of use, particularly in terms of aiding or stifling informal communication and serendipitous encounter?

2. What architectural configurations may be necessary to support informal communication and serendipitous encounter across distributed locations?

3. Are existing architectural programs subverted, reinforced or unaffected by technological interventions that support informal communication and serendipitous encounter across distributed locations?

4. In designing physical spaces for social communication, how can an architect take into account the social networks which are virtual and distributed

03/01/09 The project proposal is currently on hold as I investigate how to contain it an which funding sources would be best.
